23 May

The Land of a Thousand Dances is readying itself for a shindig of a club night on June 9th. We have records piled up in stacks higher than is possible to stack any amount of mp3′s and we are frantically scouring all known sources to retrieve, for your ears and dancing feet, only the very best in original style red hot rhythm and blues and sizzling soul!!

Our magnificent new posters are due to be posted around Edinburgh very soon, so keep your eyes peeled because the very first two people to post a piccy of these fine artworks, in situ to our facebook page will get FREE entry to this night for themselves + a friend! Posters that are in or outside Studio 24 do not count!!!

Donald Dunn RIP

I’ll just put link up to the BBC obituary at the moment…this guy played some great bass on so many of my favourite records it’s hard to know where to start!

The New Piccadillys 45

14 May

Well, the first thing to say about this fine vinyl release from Glasgow based ‘All Tore Up’ records is ‘Why have you not yet got your own copy?’, the second thing to say is ‘If you haven’t yet got a copy then go and buy one now!’.

Both sides, of this first release by ‘The New Piccadillys’, are superb!! The topside ‘Judy Is A Punk’ sounds like ‘The Ramones’ must have heard it blaring out of the AM radio whilst sitting in the back seat of the family Woody at the height of the british invasion on their way to Rockaway beach for a seaside break! I have posted the video before, but here it is again, in case you missed it.

The flip side is ‘Misery’, upsetting in name only. It’s fine cover of a track originally by ‘The Dynamics’, who via a selection from the record collection of Pete Meaden/Guy Stephens(?) had more than a wee hand to influencing the  ’The High Numbers’ debut 45 ‘Zoot Suit’.
Get your very own copy NOW from ‘All Tore Up’, a very few copies (100 and selling fast) have been pressed in the yellowist vinyl this side of ‘The Dickies’. All copies come in a custom designed company ATU sleeve (by George Miller), that is a fine item to behold!

Have a listen to this 45 and more great tunes by ‘The New Piccadillys’, whilst you are waiting delivery of your copy at ‘The New Piccadillys’ Facebook page.

Inside the Stax and Fame Studios

2 May

If somebody had told me a few years ago that they had footage filmed inside the Stax and Fame studios, I would have probably not believed them! But more and more lost and unseen (to these eyes) footage is finding its way into the digital world all the time! Whatever will turn up next I wonder?!
I should save it for my planned features about these studios…but I can’t!! Big thanks to Paul Newman for highlighting this footage and to Bedazzled for getting it there!

Ironing Board Sam

Well I have ‘Original Funky Bell Bottoms’ on ‘Googa Mooga’ by this guy, but who would’ve guessed there was live footage! (You have to put up with a pointless ad first)
